Churchill on clean living
I just had to buy Schott’s Food & Drink Miscellany at Barnes and Noble when I went there for Amanda Lamb’s book reading. Two bucks! And no wonder; it’s chock full of completely useless information.
Did you know, for instance, when Winston Churchill discovered his dining companion, Arab leader Ibn Saud, didn’t smoke or drink on religious grounds, Churchill said:
“I must point out that my rule of life prescribed as an absolutely sacred rite smoking cigars and also the drinking of alcohol before, after, and if need be during all meals and in the intervals in between.”
Talk about a good rule of thumb.
